Interactive Audiovisual Installation
with Matthias Oostrik & Diederik Schoorl
PLPLPL.PL is an interactive audiovisual installation that transforms surveillance technologies into an immersive machine celebrating deviation rather than conformity. Constructed from repurposed government display systems and equipped with infrared cameras, the spherical installation captures, analyzes, and archives the movements of every visitor, continuously evolving through their participation.
Using computer vision and machine learning, the installation compares each participant's behavior with thousands of previous recordings, generating visual compositions based on patterns of similarity. Visitors are rewarded not for predictable actions but for behaving in ways unlike anyone before them. As the archive expands, every interaction becomes part of an ever-growing collective memory that simultaneously observes, categorizes, and reinterprets its audience.
By exposing the mechanisms of surveillance instead of concealing them, PLPLPL.PL invites reflection on contemporary systems of data collection, algorithmic profiling, and voluntary self-exposure. The work questions how identities are constructed through technological observation and how surveillance increasingly shapes everyday behavior. Rather than functioning as an invisible apparatus of control, the installation turns surveillance into a visible, participatory experience that reveals both its seductive and unsettling dimensions.
